Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco: Celebration of the Chinese New Year
Chinese lunisolar* calendar starts on the new moon night between January 21 and February 20. Traditionally the New Year was celebrated for 2 weeks. Year of the (green/wood) Snake started Jan 29, 2025. Next up: Fire Horse (red, 2/17/2026), Fire Goat/Sheep (Feb 6, 2027), Earth Monkey (1/26/2028), Earth Rooster (2/13/2029), Metal Dog (Feb 3, 2030), Metal Pig (1/23/2031).
Rat goes first. The cycle restarts on Feb 11, 2032.
(*) - lunisolar, not purely lunar as the Islamic calendar.

Spring Equinox is Coming
Did you know that Chinese New Year is halfway between the Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi) and Spring Equinox? Actually it is on the first new moon on or after the mid-point between the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox. The vernal or spring equinox is the middle of spring & will be March 20th, 2006 for the Northern Hemisphere.
